The focus of the Lim group is the development of novel nonlinear optical imaging and micro-spectroscopy techniques to study complex systems such as proteins in a cell membrane and topological defects in liquid crystals. Of particular interest is CARS (coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering) microscopy, which emerges as a powerful chemical imaging tool due to its chemical selectivity and high signal sensitivity. We have been developing new multiplex CARS microscopy methods that can measure background-free vibrational spectra of microscopic samples. Currently, we are pusing the sensitivity limit of these techniques for material and biological applications.
We are also interested in the director field configurations of liquid crystals and plasmon resonance structures of metal nanoparticles. We study these topics with various linear and nonlinear optical techniques.
